An Election! What a good idea.

It would seem that we will have an election is Australia before Christmas. We have all known this for some time. In Australia a Federal Election is normally called for by the Governor General on the Prime Minister's advice. We all know it will be a Saturday and at least 5 weeks away and before the end of the year. Constitutionally that is what has to happen. So basically we can expect an election on one of the six Saturdays following the start of November. At a pinch if he called it now it could be the last weekend in October, but that would be pushing it now.

The Liberal coalition has been ruining the country for the last dozen years, and generally most people think they have made a fair fist of economic management, however fall a little short on he social agenda. The Labor Party argue that they could do a better job, and seem to be making a reasonable fist of the argument at the moment.

The media seems to be ready for a change, however the media seems never to have been too much of a John Howard fan, however we don't have to elect a friend, just someone we believe can do the job. Kevin Rudd is looking like a greased swimmer at the moment, and nothing they throw at him seems to stick. Like many Australians I wonder what it matters. I wonder how much the decisions of those we elect count, given that all that they review has been carefully reviewed and sifted by public servants, while everything the public are told has been screened, vetted and (over)simplified by the media.

Thankfully we live in a beautiful country, and we have a fantastic coastline, and we consign our politicians to meet in Canberra, a long way from the coast, so we can get on with the business of living. Lets hope we get the best possible government and not the government we deserve.
